SF Improv Theater | Un-Scripted Theater Company

Theater doesn't get any more live than this

Un-Scripted Theater Company creates smart, innovative, and entertaining improvised theater that delights audiences and advances the craft and art of improvisation.

So you want to rent the theater...

Thank you for your interest in renting our space!  In order to make this happen, there's some information we need to know...

  • Dates of rental (of course)
  • Purpose of rental (Show, Class, Rehearsal, Event, etc...)
    • Rental costs vary depending on the type of event.  You can see the basic breakdown on the Rental Info page.
  • Which space you're looking to rent (Theater, Salon or Both)
    • If you're doing a show in the Theater and would like to also rent the Salon to use as a box office/concessions** area, you may do so if both spaces are free.  Salon rental is discounted if you do this.

Rehearsal specific questions:

  • What time will your rehearsals run?
    • Entry codes will activate and deactivate approximately 15 minutes before and after your scheduled rehearsal time, so be sure you've included enough set up and breakdown time for yourself.
  • Do you have any special rehearsal needs?
    • Generally, rehearsal rentals only include the space, work-lights, and a few chairs to work with.  If you need anything additional (stage lights, platforms, taping a set out on the floor, space to store props between rehearsals, etc.) you may incur additional charges.

Show specific questions:

  • What time will your your show start?
    • We allocate a 4 hour block for a 'Show' that starts 1.5 hours before your curtain time. So, for example, with an 8PM curtain time, you'd have access to the space from 6:30PM to 10:30PM.  Entry codes will activate and deactivate approximately 15 minutes before and after your scheduled show block.  If your show requires MORE time than this, you may incur additional charges.
      • PLEASE NOTE: Saturdays, Un-Scripted has a 10PM late night show, which means any event happening in the space has a 9:45PM hard stop.  Access to the space on Saturday nights will be extended to cover 6PM to 9:45PM.
  • How many shows per day will you be doing?
    • Each show is an individual event, and is charged separately.  For example, if you're doing a matinee and and evening show, you will be charged for each.  You can't "squeeze" two shows into one block, however, if you are doing more than one performance of the same show in the same day, the second performance will be discounted appropriately depending on the length of time between shows (A set of 4PM and 8PM shows would be discounted more than a set of 1PM and 8PM shows).
  • Does your show require a set?
    • If your show requires a set, we need all of the details regarding that set sooner, rather than later. Permanent sets in our space will incur additional charges that will depend on a few things:
      • Can you remove the set between shows?
        • If the set will not hinder us renting the space during the time between your shows, then you should be fine.  You may or may not incur a charge for storage space.
      • Is it a permanent, standing set?
        • If you will be building a standing set for the duration of your run, we will not be able to rent (or use) the space for other shows or our own rehearsals during the time between your show.  As such, you may incur additional charges.
        • Permanent sets require a $500 security deposit, which will be returned upon successful completion of the following:
          • Removal of all set materials, props and any other related debris.
            • Deconstructed set pieces may NOT be put in the building's garbage facilities, but must be removed at your own expense.
          • Patching of any holes in walls or ceiling.
          • Repainting of the stage walls and floor to a flat black.
        • All set designs must be submitted to Un-Scripted for review and approved at least 30 days before load-in.
      • Will you need load-in/construction/load-out time?
        • If you will require time in the space to build and strike the set, that will be charged on a basis similar to rehearsals.
  • Will you need rehearsal time in the space before your show opens?
    • If yes, please answer the Rehearsal specific questions above.
  • Will you need Dress Rehearsal/Tech Rehearsal time in the space before your show opens?
    • If yes, please answer the Rehearsal specific questions above.  Depending on the length of your run, these rehearsals may be at a higher rental rate due to the use of the stage lights.  Longer runs are less likely to incur additional costs.
  • Will you be using more than our generic "zone" lighting plot?
    • If you will be adjusting the lighting plot in the Theater, your lighting designer (or whoever is implementing the design) will need to know how to program our dimmer packs and light board. They should plan to meet with a member of our tech staff* at some point before they begin changing anything in order to discuss what will be done, and what will need to be re-set when the run is over.  Lighting plots must be submitted to Un-Scripted for approval at least 15 days before load-in.
  • Do you have a trained lighting technician?
    • If you will be using our lighting equipment during our show, you need to have an experienced tech in the booth. This tech will need to meet with one of our tech staff* sometime before your show opens to go over light board operations.
  • Will you need to store props/costumes in the theater between shows?
    • If so, we will need to make arrangements to have a storage space for you depending on length of your run.

* Tech Staff are available for training your technicians for an additional charge.  Technicians may be available for hire to work your show if you don't have a staff of your own.

** Box Office staff may be available for hire if you don't have a staff of your own.
