Mission Statement

The Un-Scripted Theater Company creates smart, innovative, and entertaining improvised theater that delights our audiences and advances the art and craft of improvisation.

Improv Theater vs. Improv Comedy

There is a big difference between "improv theater shows" and "improv comedy shows." Improv comedy is based on stand-up comedy. It normally includes quick one-line jokes and fast-paced timing; it's a place where the sharpest and zaniest of improvisors usually steals the show. Improv theater, however, is based on stage acting. It's usually funny, but it can also be serious or touching; the comedy usually comes from situations rather than from one-line jokes; and it can be both short-form (quick scenes or games) or long-form (like a play, only without a script).

The group ComedySportz is straight-up improv comedy. The television show Whose Line Is It Anyway? has elements of both improv comedy and improv theater. The Un-Scripted Theater Company specializes in improv theater. While 95% of our shows are hilarious, and all of them have comedic elements, almost none of our shows are "improv comedy." Still confused about the difference? Come to one of our shows and see for yourself!

Seating at Shows
All Un-Scripted shows have "general admission" seating, which means there are no assigned seats. Doors open at 7:30 and shows start promptly at 8:00. If you're buying your tickets at the door, we recommend that you get to a show by at least 7:45 so you can get a good selection of seats. If your group has tickets in advance, through a group sale purchase or an online ticket purchase, the house manager will reserve seats for your party (see VIP Seating, below).

Online Ticket Purchase / VIP Seating
If you purchase your tickets online any time during the week up until 5pm the day of the show (noon for Sunday matinees), you are automatically given VIP seating. We will tape off some of the best seats in the house, and hold them for you until 7:45 (2:45 for Sunday matinees). It's our way of saying thank you for buying tickets in advance.

So remember: buy tickets online and we'll save you great seats, but get to the show at least 15 minutes before show time or we'll have to open your reserved seats up to "general admission."

Group Ticket Sales
If you have a big group of people who want to go out for a night on the town, you can take advantage of our group sales program. You will get a discount on your ticket prices along with reserved seating. Just remember, reserved seats are only held until 7:45. For more information on Group Ticket Sales please contact Tara McDonough

No Comp Tickets
The cast at Un-Scripted shows doesn't have any comp tickets to give away. If you're a starving artist or a friend of the cast and you want to see a show for free, consider helping us run the show. If you are interested in doing support for a show contact Dave Dyson and he will schedule you for an open slot.

Guest Improvisor Program
Did you know that The Un-Scripted Theater Company has a guest improvisor program? At least one slot in every show is set aside for an improvisor who is not one of the Un-Scripted Players. We love our guest policy - we get to work with more actors in the Bay Area community, and outside improvisors get a first-hand look at life with The Un-Scripted Theater Company. If you are a seasoned improvisor and you want to perform with us for a run, send us an email at and tell us a little about yourself. Improvisors are always welcome with us, and we will let you know when our next auditions are. You can also sign up on the Un-Scripted email list to receive our regular emails, which will bring you all the latest information about auditions, classes, and shows.

For more information, see our Auditions Page.

Hire Un-Scripted for your party
Are you tired of your company holiday party being just another excuse to get loaded and make out with that hot guy/girl from accounting? Is your personal party filled with “friends” who come over once a year just to drink your wine, eat your shrimp cocktails, and tell you long, sad stories about how depressed their cat is?

Un-Scripted can help! We can provide unique entertainment for your corporate or personal holiday party this year. For reasonable rates, we can tailor a show to nearly any location, length of time, or holiday theme.

We’ll be your excuse not to talk to your friends. We’ll divert everyone’s attention long enough for you to go do it on the boss’s desk. We’ll make your party one to remember for years to come, even if you can’t remember it the next day!

We can also bring improv into your workplace to enhance your leadership skills, creativity, teamwork, communication, and collaboration.

For more information, see our Corporate Page.

We have happy, art-supporting, captive audiences. You have goods, services, or money. You scratch our backs, and we'll scratch yours! We have a full sponsorship program for you or your company. From a $50 ad in our programs, to an ad swap for hard goods or services, to a $2,000 underwriting of a whole season, we have a place for you. Whether you're interested in supporting art and theater, or just looking for creative profitable ways to advertise, The Un-Scripted Theater Company would love to have you onboard. For more information on our sponsorship program, please check out our Advertising Page.

Tax Deductible Donations
The Un-Scripted Theater Company is a fully registered 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. All donations are completely tax deductible and are a vital part of our operating budget. We keep our advertising prices low to help local business. We keep our ticket prices low so our audiences members can afford to come back again and again. Donations from patrons of the arts keep us alive and growing. As a non-profit theater company, we strive to present a professional image; we are usually so successful that donors are quite surprised when they find out how much we are able to do with so little money. Our donors' funding goes a long way, and if you would like to help us continue to bring great professional improvised theater to the Bay Area, please contact Christian Utzman and find out how your financial support can be put to work today.

Outreach Program
We at the Un-Scripted Theater Company not only perform at our own shows, but we can also come perform at yours. Whether you are a school, college, office, or sketch comedy festival, we'd love to come teach or perform for you. We've got plenty of teaching experience at all age and skill levels, and we can develop a workshop, a performance, or a mix of both, that fits your needs. Just let us know how we can help!
